Young-ji Woo views art as a journey—one that momentarily lifts us from reality and transports us to new, uncharted spaces. For Woo, this journey begins in stillness. In a world overwhelmed by relentless symbols and information, she embraces solitude as a means of stripping away distractions and fully immersing herself in her artistic process. By stepping away from external noise, she creates a space where she can engage deeply with her materials, intuition, and emotions. In her latest series, Woo works with raw linen, deliberately forgoing gesso to allow the natural absorbency of the fabric to interact with ink. She first lightly dampens the surface, allowing the ink to flow organically, creating unpredictable stains that form the foundation of her compositions. Layers of pigment are then applied, though they never remain pure—each color is softened and absorbed by the ink beneath, creating a muted, meditative palette. This delicate balance of control and surrender mirrors her exploration of stillness, where color becomes an extension of silence. Through this process, Woo translates tranquility onto the canvas, inviting viewers to experience the quiet, contemplative essence of her work.
